Before using any of these search engines, make sure you understand how to evaluate the sites you find.

About.com-- In-depth info on more than 50,000 topics.
AltaVista-- allows simple question searches.
Ask -- type in a question, get a list of site links with possible answers.
Beaucoup -- directory of more than 2500 non-commercial search engines.
Best of the Web -- internet index.
DMOZ -- Open Directory Project.  50,000 volunteer editors from around the world maintain this directory.
Dogpile -- meta-search engine, returns top ten results from each of multiple search engines.
Excite -- allows users to sign up for free personalization options.
Fazzle -- submits search terms to all major indices and directories; allows user to sort and manage results.
Google -- large, easy-to-use search engine; lists results by relevancy to search query.
Grokker -- visually organizes search results into colorful geometric "maps".
KartOO -- visually presents results of meta-search.
MSN -- Microsoft's search engine/directory; includes local and national news and features.
MetaCrawler -- meta-search engine
Pandia -- gateway to web searching; includes meta-search engine, subject directory, and pull-down menu of search engines.
Soople -- simplified Google searching.
Vivisimo -- meta-search engine; groups results by subject.
Yahoo-- large subject directory; categorized by real people instead of web bots.
