THE ELEMENTS OF ART

 

LINE:

Movement of a pointed instrument over a surface, leaving a mark.

 

 

VALUE:

Refers to the lightness or darkness of an object or area. You get various values by shading.

 

 

TEXTURE:
How something feels or looks like it feels. The  roughness or smoothness of a surface.

 

SPACE:

The area between or within things.
Positive Space: The actual shapes in a design.
Negative Space: The space around the actual shapes.

 

COLOR:

 

How we see light reflected from a surface. Different wave lengths of light are seen as different colors.

 

 

SHAPE / FORM:

The outline of some mass. Shapes can be recognizable, geometric, or abstract. Form refers to volume or a mass that takes up space, such as a 3D sculpture.
