General Music 6th grade students meet for General Music Class on different schedules each semester. For one semester, each student will have one 40-minute class period every six day rotation for General Music Class; the other semester each student will have two 40-minute General Music classes.
Music
class is vocally oriented.
Singing is a life skill; the voice is the instrument students will
have for a lifetime. Emphasis
is placed on proper tone production, posture and breath support.
One goal is to help students learn to use their voices as a means
of personal expression and as a means of enjoyment.
Advanced
music literacy and reading skills (rhythmic and pitch notation, etc.) are
taught in American folk songs, composed songs and, to a lesser degree,
songs from foreign countries.
The music reading skills taught at this level are an extension of
the 4th and 5th grade music programs and increase in difficulty throughout
the school year.
Throughout
the school year, students in 6th grade will continue singing American folk
songs, American patriotic songs, including
an in-depth study of our National
Anthem.
6th Grade students continue reading and singing music featuring two
or more independent parts.
The students will be exposed to some folk songs from foreign
countries and some classical literature.
In
addition, each student is required to sing the first verse of “The Star
Spangled Banner” from memory by June 1, 2004.
This requirement is worth two letter grades on the final report
card of the year. 5th
& 6th Grade Band Band is an elective subject at every grade level. 5th & 6th Grade Band began the first day of school, Thursday, September 4th, with lessons beginning the following week. Band rehearsals are held from 1:35 - 2:10 p.m. on A, C and E days. Students in 5th & 6th Grade Band will perform in 2 in-school assemblies and 3 evening concerts . level. Every
child who has expressed a desire to participate is allowed to sing in

Auditions were held in mid- September, with each student heard individually. Every student who auditioned is allowed to participate in 5th & 6th Grade Chorus. Chorus rehearsals began the last week of September. Music selected for this grade level emphasizes choral reading skills, featuring music with two (or more) separate parts and some unison parts. 5th & 6th Grade Chorus members perform in two in-school assemblies and 2 evening concerts (Tuesday, December 18, 2007 and Wednesday, May 21, 2008).
