General
Music
All
4th grade students
meet for one 40-minute class period every six day rotation for General
Music Class.
Music class is vocally
oriented. Singing is a life
skill; the voice is the instrument students will have for a lifetime.
Emphasis is placed on proper tone production, posture and breath
support. One goal is to help
students learn to use their voices as a means of personal expression and
as a means of enjoyment.
Music literacy and
reading skills (rhythmic and pitch notation, etc.) are taught in American
folk songs, composed songs and, to a lesser degree, songs from foreign
countries. The music reading
skills taught at this level are an extension of the K-3 music program and
increase in difficulty throughout the school year.
Throughout the school
year, students in 4th grade will sing American folk songs, New York State
songs and American patriotic songs, including lessons studying our National
Anthem. There will also be a 4th grade field trip to see the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra in concert in April 2008. 4th
Grade Band Band is an elective subject at every grade level. Band lessons began the last week of September. Full 4th Grade Band rehearsals began Tuesday, October 30th. Band rehearsals are held from 10:30 - 11:10 a .m. on A, C and E days.
Students
in 4th Grade Band will perform in 2 in-school assemblies and 2 evening
concerts [Wednesday, February 6 and Wednesday, May 14, 2008] during the school
year. These are joint
performances with the 4th Grade Chorus. 4th
Grade Chorus
Chorus is an
elective subject at every grade level.
Auditions were held in
mid-October. Each student was
heard individually. Every child
who expressed a desire to participate is allowed to join chorus, with the
understanding that chorus is a year commitment.
One half of the 4th Grade
Chorus (Chorus I) meets every B and F day
from 10:30 - 11:10 a.m.; the other half of the 4th Grade Chorus
(Chorus II) meets every D and F day from
10:30 - 11:10 a.m. Both
halves rehearse together on B, D and F days for the 2-3 week preceding
each concert.
In
4th Grade Chorus, students will learn choral
reading and singing skills. Students will perform in 2 in-school assemblies and 2 evening
concerts [Wednesday, February 6 and Wednesday, May 14, 2008] during the school
year. These are joint
performances with the 4th Grade Band. |
