A long time ago, a man went traveling around the world.  He saw many strange and wonderful things.  One day, as he was coming around a bend in the road, he saw a sphinx, a creature with the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a human face.  The sphinx looked at him, and said, “You may not pass unless you can answer my riddle!”  The traveler asked the sphinx to tell the riddle.  The sphinx said,

What creature travels on four legs in the morning,

Two legs in the afternoon,

And three legs in the evening?

      The traveler thought and thought and thought.  And finally, the answer came to him.   “I know it!” he said excitedly.
